The treatment

Electrolysis treats individual hair follicles using a fine, sterile probe inserted into the follicle’s natural opening alongside the hair. Controlled electrical energy treats the structures responsible for hair growth, and the hair is then gently removed with tweezers.

There are three established methods:

Thermolysis
Uses high-frequency alternating current to generate localized heat within the follicle and destroy hair growth cells.
Galvanic
Uses direct current to create a chemical reaction within the follicle. This produces sodium hydroxide, which destroys hair growth cells.
Blend
Combines galvanic direct current with thermolysis alternating current. Heat accelerates the chemical action within the follicle.

Each method can achieve permanent hair removal. The appropriate approach depends on the hair, treatment area, skin response, and patient comfort.

Yes. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognized as permanent by the FDA. Successfully treated follicles lose their ability to produce hair. Achieving lasting clearance requires a series of appointments.

The Apilus xCell provides multiple treatment programs and adjustable parameters, offering a wide range of combinations for different hairs and treatment areas.

Energy, timing, pulse patterns, and probe selection are carefully adjusted according to patient feedback, skin response, and how readily the treated hair releases. Opti-Vizion Flip magnification supports precise follicle insertions.

The goal is effective treatment with the greatest practical comfort. No single setting is ideal for every patient or every hair.

Both treatments can be useful, but they work differently.

Laser targets pigment in the hair and can efficiently reduce suitable dark hair across larger areas. It generally cannot effectively treat blonde, red, gray, or white hair. Electrolysis does not rely on hair pigment, making it an option for all hair colors and skin tones, including individual hairs remaining after laser.

Laser candidacy depends on hair color, skin tone, treatment area, equipment, and medical history. Patients with more deeply pigmented skin require appropriate equipment and an experienced provider to reduce the risk of burns and skin color changes. These include hypopigmentation, meaning lighter patches, and hyperpigmentation, meaning darker patches. Ancestry alone does not determine candidacy.

Laser can provide substantial lasting reduction, although additional treatments may be needed. Electrolysis permanently removes successfully treated hairs, with each follicle treated individually.

Results

Yes. Electrolysis can treat unwanted hair associated with PCOS/PMOS, perimenopause, menopause, and hormonal changes during or following hormone replacement therapy.

Eagle Electrolysis specializes in hormonal hair concerns while also treating other unwanted facial and body hair. Electrolysis addresses the follicles rather than the underlying hormonal condition. Medical evaluation may complement treatment when appropriate.

Smaller areas with fewer hairs generally require less treatment time. Larger areas or areas with dense growth require substantially more time because each follicle is treated individually. Appointment length and consistency also influence progress.

An initial clearance means the visible hairs in an area have been treated. It does not mean treatment is complete, since additional hairs become visible as their growth cycles progress.

An exact completion date cannot be guaranteed, especially when hormones continue to influence growth. Treatment begins with a personalized plan, and estimates can be refined as growth patterns and treatment response become clearer.

The goal is progressive, lasting removal of unwanted hair, supported by regular assessment and clear guidance.

Yes. Successfully destroying a follicle’s hair growth structures permanently prevents that follicle from producing another hair. However, hormonal changes can cause other follicles that previously produced fine or barely noticeable hair to develop more visible growth.

New growth does not mean successfully treated follicles have recovered. Additional follicles may now need treatment. Patients experiencing ongoing hormonal changes may benefit from further appointments while retaining the lasting results already achieved.

Hair passes through three main stages:

  1. AnagenThe active growth stage, when the follicle produces hair. This is a favorable stage for treatment, and regular appointments help target hairs during active growth.
  2. CatagenThe transition stage, when active growth stops and the follicle begins to regress.
  3. TelogenThe resting stage, before the hair sheds and another growth cycle begins.

Individual hairs move through these stages at different times, which is why electrolysis requires a series of appointments.

Treatment aims to reach hairs in anagen whenever possible. Hairs in other stages can also be treated with appropriate technique. A consistent schedule helps address newly appearing hairs as treatment progresses.

Comfort & safety

Patients may feel brief warmth, tingling, or stinging when energy is applied. Sensitivity varies by treatment area and individual.

Careful insertions and personalized settings support comfort. Patient feedback is encouraged throughout the appointment, and adjustments or breaks can be made when needed.

Electrolysis is generally considered very safe when performed by a properly trained professional using appropriate technique and infection prevention practices.

Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or small crusts can occur. Less common complications include burns, infection, pigmentation changes, and scarring. Patients with a tendency to develop keloids should discuss this before treatment.

Careful assessment, sterile probes, appropriate settings, and following aftercare instructions help reduce risk. No treatment is entirely without risk.
